Breast Implants

Breast augmentation, breast aug, or a boob job is a surgical procedure which uses breast implants or fat to increase the size of breasts. The procedure can also restore breast volume, improve natural breast size symmetry or achieve a more rounded shape. There are various types of breast implants to choose from once you’ve consulted with your plastic surgeon to determine which option is best for you.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 18 or older. Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, feel and firmness. If the implant shell were to leak the saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled from the body.

Silicone Breast Implants

Filled with silicone gel, silicone breast implants provide a more natural feel of breast tissue. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women age 22 or older. If a silicone breast implant were to leak, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or could escape into the breast implant pocket and will not collapse. With silicone breast implants it may be required that you regularly visit your doctor to ensure that the implants are functioning properly.

Good candidates for breast implant procedures include individuals that are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, breasts that are fully developed, and well informed about how the procedure is performed and the potential risks associated with the procedure.

Breast augmentation surgery will not correct severely drooping breasts. A breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation may be a better option for you if severely drooping breasts is a concern of yours. A breast lift can be done at the same time as an augmentation or could require a separate operation.

When choosing a plastic surgeon to perform your breast augmentation you should seek out a surgeon who is an expert in the field of breast implants. The plastic surgeon you choose should also be someone that you feel comfortable with discussing your questions or concerns and have reviewed their previous work.
